There’s been a lot in the news lately about obesity. How can a person find out if he/she is obese?

Researchers have developed a calculation called the Body Mass Index (BMI) as a measure of whether an adult is overweight or obese. To find your BMI, divide your weight in pounds by your squared height in inches and then multiply by 703. Let’s say you weigh 160 lb and you are 5.5 ft tall. 5.5 ft = 66 inches. To square that number, multiply 66 x 66 = 4356. Now divide 160 (lbs) by 4356 = .0367309. Then multiply that number by 703 = 25.82

If the resulting BMI number is 25 to 29.9, you are considered overweight. If your BMI value is 30 or more, you are considered obese.

Several BMI calculators are available on line. The National Institutes of Health offers one at nhlbisupport.com/bmi/bmicalc.htm. Check it out. Obesity is epidemic in the U.S. Do you want to be part of those statistics?
